Important BIS Announcement for the “Sports Industry”.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a national webinar on "Standards on Sports Goods & QCOs" on December 1, 2021. The main subjects covered during the webinar included:

·       Tracing the historical evolution of the sports industry in India.

·       Highlighting the testing facilities available for sports goods at the MSME Technology Development Centre (PPDC) in Meerut.

·       Discussing Quality Control Orders and regulatory policies.

·       Providing an overview of the certification process.

·       Sharing insights into the Sports Goods Sectional Committee, PGD 41.

·       Introducing the BIS Standardization Portal.

The primary objective behind organizing this webinar was to enhance awareness of the Indian sports industry.

BIS's core message conveyed that approximately 73 sports goods and products are slated to fall under the purview of Quality Control Orders, thereby mandating BIS certification by the conclusion of the upcoming year, 2022.Although BIS has not yet disclosed the precise list of products mandating BIS Certification, they are poised to unveil a Gazette notification (QCO) in the near future. This notification will encompass Indian Standard numbers and item names.

The Indian sports sector boasts a substantial legacy of nearly a century and relies on sports equipment imports from more than 45 nations. To safeguard the well-being and quality of products accessible to the Indian populace, BIS has taken the proactive step of encompassing roughly 73 sports equipment categories within the ambit of compulsory BIS Certification.
